River Docks Are Their Own Craft
Bradenton is a river town first, and dock builders here spend most of their time on the Manatee River and the creeks and bays that feed it. The river borders the city on the north, and downtown sits along it, where the 1.5-mile Riverwalk opened in 2012. Its lower stretch below the Lake Manatee dam is an estuary, so docks see tide, current and brackish water all at once.
Designing for current
A bay dock mostly fights wind and waves. A river dock also fights current, plus whatever the current carries: logs, mats of weed, and the occasional loose boat after a storm. That pushes us toward:
- Pilings driven deep and spaced closely enough to carry side loads
- Bracing at the outer end where flow is strongest
- Lift placement that keeps the boat parallel to the current
- Fenders and bumpers on the upstream face
Pilings in brackish water
Brackish water is easier on wood than full seawater in some ways and harder in others. Piles still wear at the tide line, and silt from the river can hide damage. Piling replacement on the Manatee is a regular job for us, from swapping a few piles to rebuilding a dock on all-new ones.
Manatee zones on the river
The state rule for Manatee County makes the Manatee River a year-round slow speed zone on both shores west of I-75, and east of I-75 up to the dam, with a 25 mph marked channel east of the interstate. The Braden River, up to the dam just south of SR 70, is slow speed too, and so are parts of Palma Sola Bay. Slow traffic near shore means less wake, which helps any dock last.
Within the city or not
Bradenton incorporated in 1903, but plenty of waterfront nearby is unincorporated Manatee County. Which side of that line you are on decides who reviews the work. We check your parcel first.
Floating docks on the bayous
Not every Bradenton dock is on the open river. Bayou and creek lots often suit a floating dock for paddlecraft or a small boat, especially where the bank is soft. A float rides the tide and keeps the step short. We anchor it to pilings with hoops and add a hinged gangway.
Seawall checks
Where a dock ties into a seawall, we look at the wall too. River current can scour at the toe of a wall, and once fill starts escaping the yard settles. Catching that early keeps a small repair small.
Planning the job
We schedule pile driving around tides and give you a written scope with materials, layout and any removal.
Other services
Along with docks and pilings, we install boat lifts, repair seawalls on the bayous and add floating docks for paddlecraft. Call (941) 213-5801 to set up a visit.

Bradenton Questions
Does a river dock need to be built differently?
Yes. Current adds side loads and debris impacts, so piling depth, spacing and bracing matter more than on a sheltered canal.
How often do pilings need replacing on the Manatee River?
It varies with wood treatment, age and exposure. The best guide is an inspection at low tide, where wear at the waterline shows up.
My dock is just outside city limits. Who reviews it?
Unincorporated parcels go through Manatee County rather than the City of Bradenton, with state rules on top in both cases.
