A City of Seawalled Canals

Punta Gorda is one of the most canal-heavy places on this coast, and dock builders here know that every canal lot depends on its seawall. In 1959, the founders of Punta Gorda Isles laid out 55 miles of canals, 100 feet wide and 17 feet deep, using the dredged sand to raise the home sites. Those canals give inland lots a route to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf.

Why the wall comes first

When land is built from dredged fill, the seawall is what keeps it in place. On a canal lot it also carries the dock and often the lift. When a wall starts to fail, the yard settles, the dock tilts and the lift pilings can shift. Seawall repair here is preventive work as much as it is fixing damage.

Charlotte County's seawall process

Punta Gorda is the county seat of Charlotte County, but it is its own city, so city rules apply inside the limits. For homes in unincorporated Charlotte County, the county lists residential seawall requirements: engineered drawings, a site plan, a survey, a recorded Notice of Commencement for contracts over $5,000, and possible DEP or Army Corps approval. Inspections include a seawall cap check and a building final. We confirm which office reviews your lot first.

Lessons from Charley and Ian

Hurricane Charley hit the city as a Category 4 on August 13, 2004. Ian, also a Category 4, made landfall near Punta Gorda on September 28, 2022, shortly after its first landfall on Cayo Costa. After both, walls cracked, caps shifted and docks failed. We inspect for those problems and explain the fix.

Docks, lifts and the river

The city sits on the south bank of the tidal Peace River and the east shore of Charlotte Harbor. Beyond seawalls, we build and repair docks, replace pilings and install lifts across the Isles and along the river.

Lifts in the Isles

The 17-foot-deep canals in Punta Gorda Isles leave room for larger boats, and many owners keep them on lifts. We size lifts to the boat's loaded weight, set them on sound piles and position the beams for a straight approach down the canal. If your lift was damaged in a storm, we check the motor, switches, cables and beams before repairing or replacing.

Floats and pilings

For paddlecraft, a small floating dock off the seawall gives a low, stable launch. For older docks, piling replacement and new decking often bring a structure back to solid condition without a full rebuild.

Getting started

Punta Gorda had 19,471 residents in 2020, and about 28% of its area is water. Call (941) 213-5801 to book a seawall and dock inspection.

Punta Gorda Questions

How do I know if my Punta Gorda Isles seawall is failing?

Watch for sinking soil behind the cap, cracks, opening joints, rust stains and any lean toward the canal. Sand at the toe at low tide is a common clue.

Who permits seawall work in Punta Gorda?

Inside city limits, the city reviews it; in unincorporated areas, Charlotte County does. State and federal approvals may apply in both cases.

Can the dock stay in place during seawall repair?

Sometimes. It depends on the repair. Often part of the dock is removed and reinstalled, and it is a good time to check its pilings.
