The North Shore of the Manatee
Palmetto sits on the north side of the tidal Manatee River, facing Bradenton, and boat lifts are a big part of what dock builders do here. A 1939 state guide described the riverfront as busy with fishing and pleasure craft, and that is still the picture: owners want their boat out of the brackish water and ready to go.
Why a lift pays off on the river
Boats left in the water collect growth on the hull and running gear, and river water carries silt and debris. A lift keeps the hull clean and dry and protects it from wakes and storms. On the Manatee, we plan lifts with:
- Capacity based on the loaded boat, with margin
- Beams aligned with the current so the boat sits straight
- Enough clearance above typical high water
- Pilings checked or replaced before the lift goes on
Marina-style living
Palmetto's riverfront changed in 1998, when the 214-acre site of a former dolomite mine, which operated from the 1950s until 1974, was redeveloped as Riviera Dunes, a residential community with a marina. Owners in communities like that often deal with HOA or marina rules along with public ones, so we ask about both early.
Slow speed waters nearby
The state rule for Manatee County lists the north side of the Manatee River west of I-75 as a year-round slow speed zone. Nearby, Terra Ceia Bay, Terra Ceia Bayou and Miguel Bay are slow speed too, and Snead Cut, between Terra Ceia Bay and the river, is idle speed.
Dock repair and rebuilding
If the lift is not the issue, we repair decking, rails and pilings, or rebuild a dock that has reached the end of its life. Palmetto incorporated as a village in 1893 and as a city in 1897, so some waterfront structures have been patched many times over. A clean rebuild is sometimes the better value.
Seawalls and floats
Palmetto's riverfront includes seawalled lots, marina slips and natural shorelines. On seawalled lots, we check the cap, joints and toe before adding a lift that will load nearby pilings. On natural shores, we plan the dock's landing so it crosses vegetation with as little disturbance as possible. For paddlers, a floating launch beside a fixed dock gives a low, steady step.
Tides and clearance
The Manatee River is tidal here, and storms can push water well above normal. We set lift heights and dock elevation with that in mind so a boat on the lift stays clear in ordinary high water.
What happens on the first visit
We look at your slip at low tide, check the pilings and frame, and measure the water. Then we ask about your boat and how you use it. You get a written scope listing the work, the materials and any approvals needed, and work starts only after you sign off.

Palmetto Questions
Do I need HOA approval for a lift in a marina community?
Often, yes. Many waterfront communities have their own rules on lifts and canopies. Get those first, and we will supply drawings and specs to submit.
How high should my boat sit on the lift?
High enough to clear normal high tides and wakes with room to spare. We set it based on the water at your slip, not a fixed number.
Can you fix an old dock instead of replacing it?
If the pilings are sound, usually. If several are failing, we will show you why a rebuild might be the better value.
