A Platform at Water Level

Floating docks in Sarasota fill a different role than fixed docks. Sarasota's tide moves only about a foot on an average day, so most boat docks are built fixed on pilings. A floating dock earns its place where you want to be right at the water: launching a kayak or paddleboard, climbing out after a swim, or parking a jet ski, which is awkward from a fixed deck a few feet up.

Common uses

  • Kayak and paddleboard launches: a low platform, sometimes with rollers or a slide-in cradle, attached to a fixed dock or seawall
  • Personal watercraft ports: drive-on floating lifts for jet skis
  • Swim platforms: an easy step in and out of the water with a ladder
  • Small-boat docks: for skiffs and tenders on protected canals

How they are built

A floating dock is a deck on top of floats, held in place by pilings with sliding collars, or by arms hinged to a seawall or fixed dock. A short gangway or steps connect it to the fixed structure. Modular plastic float systems snap together in sections, while framed docks set wood or aluminum framing on encapsulated floats. Decking choices are similar to a fixed dock, though weight matters more because it changes how high the dock floats.

Storms and floating docks

Surge is the main risk here. The National Hurricane Center's reports for Helene and Milton in 2024 recorded storm tides of more than 6 feet above mean higher high water at Longboat Key and Venice. A floating dock rises with the water, which is an advantage, but only up to the top of its guide pilings or the reach of its hinge arms. Above that it can tear loose. We size guide pilings and connections with that in mind and recommend removing small launches before a major storm if they are designed to come off.

Permits and rules

Florida law gives floating vessel platforms and floating boat lifts their own exemption when they float at all times, stay within a previously permitted slip or stay within the size limits in the statute: a combined 500 square feet, or 200 square feet in Outstanding Florida Waters. A floating dock that is part of a larger new dock counts toward that dock's over-water area. Local building departments may still require a permit, and the City of Sarasota's dock checklist covers structures on the water. We check the rules for your address before you buy anything.

Fixed or floating

If you mostly run a boat, a fixed dock with a lift is usually the better investment. If you paddle, swim or keep a jet ski, a floating section beside the fixed dock gives you both. We can quote either or both at the same visit.

Floating Docks Questions

How much does a floating dock cost?

HomeGuide lists $15 to $35 per square foot installed, or $3,000 to $17,500 for 200 to 500 square feet. Modular systems run $30 to $45 per square foot.

Do floating docks make sense with Sarasota's small tide?

For boats, a fixed dock is usually simpler. For kayaks, paddleboards, swimming and jet skis, a low floating platform is far easier to use than a deck several feet above the water.

What happens to a floating dock in a hurricane?

It rises with the surge up to the top of its guide pilings or hinge reach. Above that it can break free, so piling height and removal plans matter.

Do I need a permit for a floating dock?

State law exempts some floating platforms and lifts within set size limits, but local permits may still apply, and a floating section added to a new dock counts toward its total area.
