Small Docks for Shallow Canals

Rotonda West is laid out like a wagon wheel, and most of its neighborhoods have shallow canals that link from one segment to the next under the bridges on Rotonda Boulevard and Rotonda Circle. That shape tells dock builders what is practical: small docks, floating platforms and launches for kayaks, canoes and small boats rather than big lifts.

Planned in 1970

Cavanagh Communities Corporation bought the land in 1969, and development began in 1970. The plan echoed temporary World War II airfields, with the mostly undeveloped Rotonda Community Park and Preserve at the hub. Five golf courses wind between the houses, and Broadmoor has twelve interconnected ponds for shallow watercraft.

Floating docks for shallow water

In shallow canals, a fixed dock can leave a big gap between deck and boat when water is low. A floating dock rides at the surface so the step stays short. We design floats with:

  • Enough freeboard and buoyancy for the people and gear you load
  • Pile hoops or collars that let the float move freely
  • A hinged gangway from the bank
  • Low-profile edges that make launching paddlecraft easy

We also watch depth: a float that sits on the bottom at low water will wear and settle unevenly.

Fixed docks and repairs

Some lots are better suited to a small fixed dock or platform. We build those and repair older ones, replacing decking and pilings as needed.

Rules to check

Rotonda West is in Charlotte County, where residential docks need sealed drawings, a site plan and reviews for zoning setbacks and protected species. Community deed restrictions may add their own rules, so check with your association before you plan. We supply drawings for both.

Bank and seawall conditions

Some Rotonda West lots have seawalls; others have sloped banks. On sloped banks, we design the landing so the dock does not undermine the bank and add steps where needed. On walled lots, we check the cap and joints before tying a dock in.

Hardware for fresh and brackish water

Shallow canals warm up quickly and grow algae, which can make decking slick. We use textured decking and stainless hardware so the dock stays safe underfoot and lasts longer.

Ask your association first

Deed restrictions and community rules in planned developments often cover dock size, materials, colors and where a dock may sit on the lot. Getting the association's answer before you finalize a design saves redrawing later. We provide a plan view, elevation and material list you can submit with your request, and we adjust the design to match what the association approves.

Keeping a float in good shape

Floating docks need a little upkeep: check the hoops for wear, keep the hinge on the gangway free, and clear growth from the underside of the floats now and then. We show you what to watch.

Storm checks

Rotonda West was among the many Florida communities hit by Hurricane Ian in September 2022. If your dock or float has been loose since, we can inspect and repair it. The 2020 census counted 10,114 residents. Call (941) 213-5801 to talk about your canal.

Rotonda West Questions

Can I keep a powerboat on a Rotonda West canal?

The canals are shallow, which limits boat size. We look at depth at your lot and help you choose a dock that fits what can actually use it.

Is a floating dock allowed?

Usually it can be, subject to county review and any community rules. We provide drawings for both.

What does Charlotte County check on a dock permit?

Building code, zoning setbacks, right-of-way, trees and natural resources, including protected species.
