Inland Water, Different Docks
North Port is not a bayfront city, and the dock builders' work here looks different from the keys. The city covers about 104 square miles, of which 4.83 square miles is water: freshwater waterways, Myakkahatchee Creek, and frontage on the Myakka River. Docks here are often smaller, built for kayaks, canoes, pontoons and fishing, and floating docks are a common choice.
A city platted by a developer
General Development Corporation, founded by the Mackle brothers in 1954, platted and sold most of what is now North Port, and the city incorporated as North Port Charlotte on June 18, 1959. The result is a grid of residential lots, many of them backing onto drainage waterways. Before building anything on one of those, the first question is what you are allowed to put in that water, and we check with the city.
Floating docks for changing water
Inland water levels in North Port rise with the summer rains and drop in the dry season. A floating dock rides those swings so the step to a kayak stays easy. We anchor floats to pilings with sliding hoops and connect them with a hinged ramp.
On the Myakka
The Myakka River runs 72 miles to Charlotte Harbor, and its last 20 miles are tidal and brackish. A 34-mile stretch in Sarasota County is a state Wild and Scenic River, designated in 1985. The state manatee rule makes the Myakka River, Warm Mineral Springs, Deer Prairie Creek and Big Slough slow speed year-round, and part of the Warm Mineral Springs and Salt Creek area is closed to entry from November 15 to March 15. River-lot docks here need care with both rules and banks.
Flood lessons from Ian
Hurricane Ian made landfall on September 28, 2022, and North Port saw excessive flooding. Docks along waterways that flooded can lose decking, see piles undermined, or have floats pushed off their hoops. We inspect and repair that kind of damage.
Small lifts and boathouses
On deeper river lots, a small boat lift can keep a jon boat or pontoon out of the water. We check depth, bank condition and pilings first. Where rules allow, a simple canopy over the lift keeps the sun off; DEP's single-family dock criteria limit roof overhangs to one foot beyond the lift and boat and do not allow walls around the slip.
Bank conditions
Inland banks can be soft, and some erode during heavy rain. We look at how stable the bank is before choosing where the dock meets the shore and whether the landing needs extra support.
Large-lot planning
North Port's size means long drives between job sites, so we group visits by area and give you a clear window for the inspection.
Other work
We also repair older fixed docks, replace pilings and install small lifts where the water allows. Call (941) 213-5801 to talk about your waterfront.

North Port Questions
Can I put a dock on the waterway behind my North Port house?
Possibly. Many waterways in the city serve drainage, and what is allowed varies. We check with the city for your lot before designing anything.
Why a floating dock instead of a fixed one?
Inland water levels rise and fall with the seasons. A float keeps a steady step to your kayak or small boat.
Are there special rules on the Myakka?
Yes. It is a manatee slow speed zone, part of the river is a state Wild and Scenic River, and banks and vegetation get extra attention in review.
