New Docks on a Shallow Bay
Osprey faces some of the shallowest, grassiest water in the area, and that drives every new dock we design for it. Dock builders working along Little Sarasota Bay have to plan around depth and seagrass before they plan around boats. Osprey is an unincorporated community whose waterfront meets the Intracoastal Waterway, crossed here by the historic one-lane Blackburn Point Bridge.
Reaching water deep enough
DEP's design criteria for single-family docks in aquatic preserves stop a dock where the water reaches 4 feet below mean low water, and state review elsewhere also weighs depth and seagrass. On a gently sloped bay shore, that limit and your boat's draft decide the length. Sometimes the answer is a longer walkway to a small platform; sometimes it is a smaller boat or a floating section for paddlecraft.
Building over seagrass
Where DEP applies its seagrass criteria for resource protection areas, it asks for narrow planks (no more than 8 inches wide) spaced at least half an inch apart, and a walkway set 5 feet above mean high water so light reaches the bottom. A dock designed that way from the start avoids surprises at review. We map grass beds near your shoreline before drawing.
Slow speed all around
The state rule for Sarasota County treats Little Sarasota Bay as a year-round slow speed zone in several segments, including the section with Dryman Bay and South Creek, with a 25 mph limit only in the marked main channel. Boats here move slowly near shore, which suits docks set in shallow, protected water.
Seawalls on older lots
Some Osprey waterfront lots are protected by seawalls, others by a natural shoreline with mangroves or marsh grass. Where a wall exists, we check it before tying a new dock into it. Where the shore is natural, we design the access walkway to cross the vegetation with minimal impact and keep the dock clear of mangrove roots.
Lifts in shallow water
Shallow water makes lifts tricky: the boat has to come off the lift and float away without touching bottom at normal low tides. We measure carefully at the slip and may recommend placing the lift at the far end of the dock where the water is deepest.
Repairs and pilings
We repair older docks too, replacing decking, rails and pilings where the wood has thinned at the waterline.
A written scope you can compare
Every estimate lists the dock's length, width and height, the number and type of pilings, decking material, hardware and any lift or float. Where state or county approval is needed, we note which agencies are involved. That makes it easy to compare our proposal with others side by side.
What else we build here
- Boat lifts sized to the depth at the slip
- Floating launches for kayaks near Oscar Scherer State Park
- Dock repair and new decking on older structures
- Piling replacement where wood has thinned
Housing and timing
Osprey had 6,690 residents and 3,740 housing units in 2020. Because it has no city government, Sarasota County handles local review along with the state. Call (941) 213-5801 to book a site visit.

Osprey Questions
Why can't my Osprey dock go out as far as I want?
Water depth, seagrass and setbacks all limit length. In aquatic preserves, DEP's design criteria stop a single-family dock where water reaches 4 feet below mean low water, and we check what state and county review will allow at your lot.
What does building over seagrass change?
Narrower planks with gaps, a higher walkway and careful placement so boats do not scar the bottom. We plan for it from the start.
Do you build kayak launches?
Yes. On shallow Osprey shorelines a small floating launch is often the most practical choice.
